Almond Milk Dairy FreeHow Is It Made?

It is produced by toasting and grinding almonds in a blender with water, then the almond pulp (flesh) is strained out with a strainer or cheesecloth. Almond milk can also be made by adding water to almond butter.

What Does It Taste Like?

Almond milk has a pleasant taste and a creamy texture, and we think it’s tastiest when used in tea, coffee, smoothies and oatmeal. Some of the vitamins and minerals it contains are naturally occurring within the almonds and some are added. No artificial flavors or colors are added. Most brands state that they are made from responsibly-grown almonds and contain no genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Be sure to choose a brand that contains no added sugar (unsweetened) and make sure it does not contain the harmful additive, carrageenan.

Which Nutrients Does It Contain?

Almond milk is rich in vitamin E and one cup contains approx. 2.5 grams of fat (these fats are heart-healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.) It contains 1 gram of protein per cup which is 7 grams less than traditional cow’s milk with approx. 8 grams of protein per cup, though providing you are getting enough protein in other areas of your diet, this should not be a problem. The milk is also low in calories and is fortified with nutrients including the vitamins A, B12, D and E, and contains the essential minerals, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and zinc.

What About Food Allergies?

Almond milk can be a good choice for those with food allergies or intolerances. It does not contain any dairy, lactose, soy, eggs, cholesterol, gluten, MSG, casein or whey (milk proteins).
